Earlier this year I was honoured to be commissioned by the North Devon AONB team to produce a series of illustrations for their Coastal Creatures Project resources. I have been involved in the fantastic project from the start as part of my role as a marine biologist and it was nice to be able to contribute with my other hat on! I produced a set of images of terrestrial (A nice change for me!) and marine species that featured in maps, guides and other products aimed at encouraging people to visit North Devon’s incredible coastal habitats and enjoy and appreciate the wildlife found there.
The Swimming crab character was a special request and features in the excellent spotter guide produced for the project. I was asked to produce an ‘anatomically faithful velvet swimming crab carrying a magnifying glass!’ A great challenge! This is the result.
